Spirit of Generosity Unveiling and Owen’s Train dedication

“Spirit of Generosity”

As part of Kingsport’s 100th Birthday Celebration, artist Val Lyle has been commissioned to create a sculpture entitled “The Spirit of Generosity” to be located in Centennial Park.  The sculpture will be unveiled on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 3:00 PM

Val Lyle, owner of Art Now LLC, has worked for over one year to prepare the sculpture.  She quickly identified Appalachian Ironworks as a collaborator and then set out to evoke the excitement and nostalgia associated with the legendary ‘Santa Train’.  Working from photos of one of the Santa Train Santas, Val has created a life-size sculpture of the jolly old elf who will be perched on his very own caboose pedestal and which will welcome all those who visit the park to join Santa for a selfie or fun photo.  Entitled, The Spirit of Generosity, the sculpture celebrates the annual effort of CSX, Food City and the Chamber of Commerce to spread joy along the train’s route – another example of the Kingsport Spirit!

“Owen’s Train”

In memory of the brave but brief life of Owen Steinmann and in honor of Kingsport families.

Amanda Dean and Justin Steinmann have been involved in the planning of Kingsport’s Centennial since formation of the Centennial Commission and the decision to build Kingsport Centennial Park.

Family, friends and colleagues of the Steinmann family are coming together to commission four unique bronze sculptures of miniature train cars to be located throughout Centennial Park. Together the locomotive, two box cars and caboose will form Owen’s Train; a lasting memorial to a wonderful family and their little boy described by his father as the “bravest and best of us.”

The young and young at heart that visit Centennial Park will be encouraged to participate in a scavenger hunt to find all of the cars in Owen’s Train. While finding the train cars, they can learn about Kingsport’s history, splash in the fountain and visit the Santa Train sculpture entitled “The Spirit of Generosity”.

Owen’s Train will remind us all of the legacy of family and its lasting impact on the spirit of generosity and hope for our community.
